In Sri Lankan and Indian tradition the janma nakshatra - not the Sun sign - is the primary birth identifier: it names the birth star recorded in a horoscope, sets the starting Vimshottari dasha, and drives nekath (auspicious time) selection and porondam matching. The calculation subtracts the Lahiri ayanamsa from the Moon's tropical longitude and divides by 13°20′. Birth time accuracy matters: the Moon crosses a whole nakshatra in about a day, so a few hours' error can shift the result near a boundary.
