When two waves occupy the same medium their displacements add point by point. Equal frequencies in phase interfere constructively (double amplitude); 180° out of phase they cancel. Slightly different frequencies produce beats — the slow amplitude envelope you hear when tuning an instrument, at rate |f₁ − f₂|.
